　　美国空军赫斯上校本来是俄亥俄州的牧师。二战中他加入美国空军。在一次轰炸纳粹德国的使命中，他失慎炸了一个孤儿院，37名德国孤儿丧生。战后，他心里惭愧，不能回去继续传教，因而就重新加入美国空军，来到朝鲜疆场给韩国空军练习首批战役机驾驶员。在他的练习下，韩国空军顺遂完成了一系列战役使命。空军基地四周有一个韩国妇女在看管十几个朝鲜战争孤儿。在烽火中，赫斯上校只管庇护和照顾这些孤儿。后来，他在筹款建立了一个孤儿院，让朝鲜战争孤儿有家可归，这使得他的良知获得安静。
