　　第二次天下大战的烽火在英国熄灭。在阔别疆场的海滨小镇，银行司理梅因沃林的生活没有由于战争而出现紊乱。早晨，梅因沃林戴着礼帽、穿着整洁、拄动手杖、提着公文包，神气庄重而名流，打着号召，走向银行。梅因沃林身为司理，且又年过花甲，但对自己和工作职员非常严酷，助手威尔逊因换一枚变质的鸡蛋早退一分钟，梅因沃林都要不留人情地予以批评。
　　
　　银行定时开门营业。银行劈面的肉店老板琼斯跑过来告诉梅因沃林一个严重消息：广播正在播报消息，军朴直在招募地方自愿军，辅佐正规军负责地方防御，凡是18至65岁的汉子都可以到当地差人局报名。梅因沃林年轻时在水兵做过一年中士，现在国家有难，岂能豪杰迟暮。
　　
　　梅因沃林顾不了银行的工作，拔腿就往差人局赶。此时的差人局已经被一帮老头拥得水泄欠亨，梅因沃林费尽满身气力挤进去也报不上名。看着一帮热情高涨的老头和紊乱不胜的排场，梅因沃林振臂高呼：想当自愿军的跟我走！随着梅因沃林走，一帮老头来到教堂，在牧师的办公室排队挂号。
　　
　　梅因沃林率领的老人自愿军组建完成。在百发苍苍颤颤微微的队伍前，梅因沃林做组建带动：情势很清朗，纳粹德国已经摆好架势，随时预备度过海峡，侵犯我们的故里。我们身为地方自愿军，没有枪枝兵器，手无寸铁，但我们有聪明和缔造力！请相信！纳粹德国在我们的聪明和缔造力眼前休想得逞！
　　
　　年轻时有过参战经历的老人自愿军的聪明和缔造力不成小视。在梅因沃林的启发下，老人们开动脑子，琼斯拆掉家里浴缸，“研制开辟”了反潜作战装配；迈克维尔用架子搭起公路设滑车……虽然个个老态龙钟憨态可掬，但勇敢无畏精神可嘉。特别是在敦克尔刻的消息传来时，加倍鼓舞了梅因沃林的斗志，在军方都一筹莫展时，成功崩溃了三名德军特务的狙击，赢得全镇的尊重和爱戴。
