　　阿基姆（艾迪·墨菲 Eddie Murphy 饰）是扎门达国的王子，他和随从桑米（阿瑟尼奥·豪尔 Arsenio Hall 饰）来到美国，要在这里停止为期40天的微服拜候。对于阿基姆来说，此行还有别的一个目标，他对父亲甲斐（詹姆斯·厄尔·琼斯 James Earl Jones 饰）为自己放置的亲事很是不满，所以阿基姆决议，一定要在美国找到自己的真命天女。
　　荣幸的是，这样的女人很快就出现了，她的名字叫做莎莉（沙里·海德利 Shari Headley 饰）。为了接近莎莉，阿基姆进入了莎莉父亲开的面包店成为了一位打工仔。莎莉有一个本性非常粗鲁的男友，相比之下，她加倍喜好文质彬彬的阿基姆，正当两人的关系逐步步入正轨之时，甲斐居然亲临美国，阿基姆苦心隐瞒的身份眼看就要被揭露。

　　继《颠倒乾坤》以后，美国著名黑人影星埃迪·墨菲和著名导演约翰·兰迪斯再度联手合作了这部“被搬到今世30年月的浪漫笑剧片”，活跃活泼和迂回盘曲的情节中穿插着插科讥笑的滑稽排场，奇异的对话和即兴创作为影片增加了生气。影片的处置方式非常罕有：不但将黑人置于焦点的职位，由黑人饰演重要的脚色，且没有将黑人表示为龌龊的贫民。此前并未打仗笑剧题材的埃迪·墨菲在表示出了无与伦比的笑剧天赋和感化力，为其演艺生活翻开了一个新的范畴。可同埃迪·墨菲相媲美的是两位男演员詹姆斯·厄尔·琼斯和阿塞尼奥·霍尔，演技都很出色。在第61届奥斯卡上，此片获最好打扮设想和最好化装奖的提名。
