　　勒保斯基（杰夫·布里吉斯 Jeff Bridges 饰）绰号“督爷”，是个无所作为的中年混混，整天最大的消遣就是和两个一样能干的朋友沃特（约翰·古德曼 John Goodman 饰）和多尼（斯蒂夫·巴斯米 Steve Buscemi 饰）打保龄球。一日，一群打手把他错认成城里和他同名同姓的阿谁百万富翁加以威胁，临走还尿在他的地毯上。无缘无故吃亏的督爷只好跑去找阿谁富翁（戴维·哈德莱斯顿 David Huddleston 饰）补偿，未果后自作主张偷了富翁一块地毯。几往后富翁又把督爷找去帮手，因其年轻妻子邦妮（塔拉·雷德 Tara Reid 饰）遭到绑架，督爷被要求帮手送赎金给绑匪，就此和两个朋友一路卷入一场啼笑皆非的犯罪事务……

　　影片报告了一个弄错身份的故事，在故事主线中，伴以勒索、变节、欺骗、盗用、性和，对于科恩兄弟的粉丝们来说，这些元素固然不会陌生，由于科恩兄弟早在1985年拍摄的第一部电影《血迷宫》中就曾表现出这些主题。"我们将《大保龄古怪绑架》看做是发生在90年月的雷蒙德·钱德勒（Raymond Chandler）的故事，"伊桑·科恩说。雷蒙德·钱德勒是著名侦察小说作家，《夜长梦多》、《爱人谋杀》等很多40年月的黑色电影都是按照他的小说改编的。本片故事发生在洛衫矶，仆人公随着情节的展开辗转于分歧的社会阶级，这些都是钱德勒小说的特点，只是在这部电影中，钱德勒笔下的私人侦察菲利普·马罗被一个懒惰、失业的名叫杰夫·勒博斯基的家伙所取代，他称自己为"城里人"。影片故事是以现代视角报告的，而且时候被设备在1991年的海湾战争时代，"城里人"和他的朋友也因特别的布景而遭到了间接影响。实在影片剧本已经完成多年，由于两位主演杰夫·布里吉斯和约翰·古德曼的片约一向目不暇接才迟延至今。布里吉斯说："可以与科恩兄弟合作让我太兴奋了，当第一次看到剧本时，我感受自己就是为了饰演\'城里人"而生，我完全了解这个汉子，由于我想他的身上有我的影子，假如我没作演员，也许我会像他那样生活。"经过一周的彩排，影片于1997年1月27日在好莱坞北部开拍，剧组随后又转道贝弗利山和洽莱坞北部的摄影棚。建造设想师里克·亨利希（Rick Heinrichs）称影片希望显现出一个传统的洛衫矶，拔取了一些5、60年月的修建，不但要建立这座城市的感受，还要突显一向眷顾曩昔的"城里人"和沃尔特，这些修建甚至让人想起越战期间，那是"城里人"和沃尔特深受影响的年月。在拍摄老勒博斯基的豪宅时，主创职员碰到了一个题目，乔尔·科恩对这幢大屋子的黑白格子空中很反感，以为感受差池，但对屋子的其他方面很是满足，因而剧组筹算把空中处置一下。后来乔尔心血来潮，为"城里人"设想了以黑白格子为布景的梦乡，从而与屋子空中相辅相成，题目被奇妙的水到渠成。
　　疯狂而荒诞的笑剧情味，古怪怪僻的人物，复杂盘曲、扑朔迷离的情节，严重明快的节奏，令科恩兄弟的影片历来就不缺少可视性。本片是科恩兄弟的新派黑色片，具有稠密的笑剧气概和典型的科恩式情节。几位配角的表演夸张而有回味，编导的黑色诙谐感使人叫绝。被影迷称为妙极了的电影，罗嗦可是风趣，可假如你带着传统的代价观来看的话也许会感应迷惑不解。
