　　1992年，维尔霍文在戛纳电影节上首映的作品《本能》备受争议，这也是昔时国际影坛上最著名的事务之一。影片概况是在报告一个变态杀人的惊险侦破故事，而现实上是在描画一种原始的，一种狂野的豪情。这类维尔霍文早期作品中已经成型的结构在影片中获得纵情发挥，影片获得了颤动效应。首映票房即到达1512万美圆。在影片拍摄时代，就有众多同性恋者提出抗议，并试图阻止影片拍摄。美国电影协会以片中血腥的暴力镜头、直露的性排场、吸毒排场和粗口将本片定为R级。不外，这个终极上映的版本并非完整的导演剪辑版，该版未能获得美国电影协会的核准，时隔多年，该版本以DVD形式再度出书，销量丝绝不减昔时。
　　《本能》中的焦点理念植根于广为人知的弗洛伊德的关于的理论与人类杀戮天性的生物学本能。据此，影片由一个双向的“心理流”建构：即男配角出于类似心理误杀旅客，是以确信女配角就是凶手，并冒着也会被女配角在飞腾时杀死的危险，与被杀者一样双手被绑着与女配角发素关系；而女配角被设想成为一个小说家，她的行为与她的小说中的行为构成一种两重结构，她之前的小说又与现在正在写的小说构成一种两重结构；她的公然的类似女杀手似的行为与黑暗的不著名的女杀手的行为构成一条平行线，她的所作所为居然与女杀手如此相象，这样就使影片显现出多种两重结构对应的关系，布满悬念与戏剧性。以致于首映后观众一向为杀手究竟是谁而争论不休。 [关于导演]
　　保罗•维尔霍文诞生于著名的“性都”阿姆斯特丹，在这个开放的城市中生活对后来维尔霍文的电影气概构成有着不成低估的影响，“性本能”亦成为他影片中的重要议题。1985年，维尔霍文执导了自己的第一部好莱坞作品B级片《血与肉》，起头正式踏上好莱坞的平展大道。1987年，他执导的成名作品《铁甲威龙》(机械战警)票房喜人，一举奠基了自己成功导演的职位。1989年，他又执导了的由巨星施瓦辛格主演的科幻行动巨片《周全回忆》(宇宙威龙)，被以为是一流水准的文娱片。今后提升为好莱坞一流导演之列。1992年他执导了由莎朗·斯通与道格拉斯主演的《本能》，在影坛备受争议，反应颤动，他的导演奇迹也到达颠峰。随后他执导的影片《艳舞女郎》，较《本能》中的“性本能”有过之而无不及，终究超越美国观众的心理承受范围，遭到美国影评界和普通观众的口诛笔伐，影片被定为NC-17级影片，票房惨败。后来的科幻行动片《银河战队》以摆脱“性爱片”的阴影。自《铁甲威龙》中的人体革新加上《本能》中的“人类本能”的夹杂版《通明人》以后维尔霍文便堕入寂静。[关于演员]
　　究竟上，《本能》一片在筹拍时，也曾前后约请过其他的著名女影星，如蜜雪儿·法伊夫、金·贝辛格和吉娜·戴维斯等人担任女配角，但她们都因其中的表露镜头太多而拒绝出演。惟有莎朗·斯通愿意接管。听说她还已经决心地袒胸露臂走过导演眼前，以此引发导演留意。最初她终究获得了这个脚色，并以其在影片中热烈狂放的性爱表演和大胆的袒露镜头名声大振、家喻户晓。
